Cultural Challenges
Across different cultures the level of participation of parents in their children's schooling varies greatly.
If teachers do not tell a parent what is expected of them and whether or not they are expected to participate inside or outside of the classroom they have no way of knowing. [1]
Economic Challenges
Many parents work multiple jobs to provide for the family and do not have the time to participate in the classroom and go to their child's school. In addition, many parent-teacher meetings at held at times that make it very difficult for parents to attend. Holding meetings right after school or in the evening on weeknights may mean that a parent is still working or must eat dinner. Many schools do not offer programs in the primary language of the parents and do not offer childcare during meetings and events at the school. A big challenge to parent-teacher-student relationships is the assumption that all families have the same resources. [2]
